Marking queens is an essential practice in beekeeping. It allows beekeepers to precisely track queens from year to year and identify their age. Here's how it works:

Choice of color:

The color code for marking queens is based on the year the queen was introduced into the hive.

The colors are reused in the same order every five years:

Blank for years ending in 1 and 6.

Yellow for years ending in 2 and 7.
